Copley Library, the Legal Research Center, and the Media Services have different policies regarding overdues and fines. This document defines the policy of Copley Library only. It also does not include the policies of books borrowed through the San Diego Library Circuit Consortium.

LOAN PERIODS

The loan period for books is 28 days with the possibility of 2 renewals. There is no grace period.  The standard loan periods for Reserve items is 1-4 hours depending on the item and  are Library Use Only, there are some  items that can be taken out of the library for  1 and 3 days . Permanent Reserve items fall under the same loan periods as  regular  reserves  with  the  exception of  compact discs. Loan periods for compact discs can range form 14 days to 28 days   You are responsible for knowing  the due dates for any Reserve item you check-out.  Loan periods are set and are non-adjustable. Only 2 Reserve items may be borrowed at a time, and there can be no renewals nor holds placed on these materials.

FINE AND BILLING POLICY

FOR BOOKS:

One day after the due date, as a courtesy, the library sends an Overdue Notice to the local address you have given us. This is a reminder that fees are being assessed at $1.00 per day per book. For Reserve items, 50 cents per item per hour is assessed. If no local address is available, the notice is sent to your permanent address. You are responsible for notifying the library of a change of address. Ten days after the first notice, a second courtesy notice is sent advising you that if you do not respond within ten days from the date of the second notice, a bill based on the cost of the book plus a non-refundable processing fee. Borrowing privileges may be suspended when the Billing Notice is generated. The Billing Charge consists of a non-refundable processing fee of $25.00 plus the replacement cost of the book. Any book that is out of print will be charged a flat rate of $75.00 ($50.00 for cost of item + $25.00 processing fee). Failure to respond to a Billing Notice will result in your account being sent to the Student Accounts Office. If the library recalls a book from you, a recall notice is ent to your local address.  If  you do not respond or return the book by the new due date assigned in the recall notice, fines will be assessed from the new due date, not the original due date. You will always be guaranteed at least a 28 day loan period. The library is not responsible for mail not received or sent to an old address.

FOR RESERVE ITEMS:
Overdue fines accrue at 50 cents per hour. If reserve material is not returned within 48 hours, a replacement charge of $76.00 is assessed whether the material is a photocopied folder or a book. The Billing Notice consists of a non-refundable processing fee of $36.00 and a $40.00 replacement fee.
