Mission:
Cataloging: The mission is to make print and non-print
materials available in the stacks, and
accessible through Copley's on-line computer system SALLY, as quickly and accurately
as possible. This is accomplished by entering relevant bibliographic description
into SALLY.
Preservation: The mission is to assure optimal physical
and environmental conditions for the print
and non-print collections in Copley Library.
Cataloging Services:
If a patron needs a book designated as "In Process" it can be retrieved
from the Department and cataloged, usually within a matter of hours. Requests
can be made through Access Services or Reference Services.
Requests to see journals already pulled off the shelves for binding,
can also be made and can usually be accommodated, since Bindery
Preparation takes place in the Department of Cataloging and Preservation.
The reclassification project from the Dewey Decimal Classification
System to
the Library of Congress Classification system has been completed. We are
currently working on classifying our media collection to make searching and
accessing those materials more efficient.
Preservation Activities:
In the area of Preservation, the Department sends books and periodicals to
be bound, performs in-house repairs of damaged materials, instructs student
workers and staff in correct handling of materials, and monitors physical
and environmental conditions of the collection.
PLEASE NOTE: If a patron notices damaged materials, leaking
water, food in the stacks, sees
insects and other living or dead animals in the stacks, it should be brought
to the Department's attention. If moldy books are found, please notify me,
Margit Smith, personally at x2365, BUT DO NOT HANDLE THE BOOKS YOURSELF.
