A special note to visitors to Copley Library of
the University of San Diego...
While direct access
to collections and essential services will continue to be available
to the outside community as long as possible,
non-USD patrons should be encouraged to explore the resources of
their primary libraries and public institutions first, and to use
Copley Library as a secondary resource. For purposes of this document "USD
Community" is defined as currently enrolled students, faculty,
staff, or administration of the University of San Diego, and those
alumni of the University possessing valid USD Alumni Association
Cards.
The Library should also,
as far as possible, protect on behalf of the USD Community the
core collection of heavily-used materials
which the libraries of other institutions can reasonably be expected
to provide for their own users. On the other hand, on- site access
and services can be offered to more unique items in Copley Library's
collections, such as specialized materials relating to the Roman
Catholic Church. We view our library as a community resource
for information related to Roman Catholicism.
Most of our databases have contractual restrictions that only
allow us to make them available to members of the USD Community. Should
you need to use periodical databases and other specialized databases,
we encourage you to visit your local public library or state
institutions that do not have those restrictions.
The needs of the USD community must have priority in the use of
library services and computer databases. Special services to the
outside community can only be extended when they do not interfere
with normal services to members of the USD Community.
SERVICE FOR GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS RECEIVED THROUGH DEPOSITORY
PROGRAMS:
Basic reference service for government documents received through federal and
state depository programs shall be provided to all patrons equally, regardless
of affiliation, in compliance with relevant federal and state laws.
PROVISION OF BASIC REFERENCE SERVICES:
Together with access to collections and facilities (excluding databases other
than on the online catalog, SALLY), the Reference Department will attempt
to provide basic reference service to outside patrons. Basic reference service
is defined as assistance in gaining access to materials held in Copley Library.
It is characterized by the following attributes:
- a) Priority is given to patrons present in the Library and
prepared to help themselves.
- b) A higher priority is given to members of the USD Community
who are using the library, and secondarily to those outside the
USD Community.
- c) Lowest priority is given to telephone reference questions
from outside users.
