A few of our databases still require that you configure proxy server settings in your browser (e.g., Netscape,IE) Once your browser is set up correctly, when you attempt to access a subscription database by clicking on a link to that database you will be presented with a web page titled "USD Libraries' Patron Verification"; this page has a prominent blue background. Follow this link to see a screen shot of the page.

System Requirements

  • An Internet Service Provider (ISP) - find an ISP
  • Cookies and javascript enabled on your browser
  • No other proxy server configuration.

AOL users:  Patrons using AOL will not be able to access our online resources from off campus using the AOL browser. You must also have a copy of Nescape Navigator 4.x or higher or Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 4 installed on your PC. After you install one of these browsers, you should dial into AOL as usual and login. After the connection is made with AOL, you then need to open whatever browser you installed and configure the browser according the instructions provided below.

  1. To install Netscape Navigator for AOL:
  2. Keyword: netscape
  3. click on Click Here!
  4. click on Download Netscape
  5. Follow the prompts to load and install Netscape Navigator
  6. Follow the steps for setting up Netscape Version 4

Macintosh Users: Internet Explorer 5 on the Macintosh does not work with our proxy server. Use Netscape or Internet Explorer 4.x instead.

Some Important Notes:

  • ONLY current University of San Diego students, faculty and staff may use the USD Libraries' subscription databases.  You must be registered as a patron in order to use the system.  To register, go the circulation desk of either the Copley Library or the Legal Research Center, fill out the required form and present your valid USD ID card.
  • Once you have your browser set to use the library's proxy server, all your internet traffic will be routed though the proxy server, not just traffic relating to the library's databases. You may wish to "turn off" your proxy server configuration when not using library databases.
